No Need to Rebadge: Smart Card Solutions for Existing Applications

From IDenticard Systems...

You don't have to dump your existing security system in order to benefit from the unsurpassed power of smart card technology. In fact, many security system manufacturers have developed innovative and affordable solutions that transform existing badges instantly into smart cards, without the cost or inconvenience of rebadging.

A growing number of companies want to integrate smart card technology into an existing security system without losing any of their prior investment. For example, a customer has an access control system in place and simply wants extra security at a few doors. They can make the change to smart card technology by using products that offer template storage without the need to rebadge.

Smart technology formats that may be more convenient for some organizations' security identification and access control needs include key fobs, which fit easily on a key ring; or adhesive tags, which can be applied directly to the existing card surface. If you're a security professional looking for an immediate and efficient way to introduce smart card technology into an existing program, for immediate use or for future applications, these products could be your best bet.

Why Get Smart?
From physical access to a building, to access to an organization's data network, the multiple application capability of smart cards is emerging as the preferred card technology solution for today's security markets. Here's why:

• Cost is no longer an objection to implementing smart card technology. You can harness the power of smart card technology today, and all its potential for future applications, for the same cost (materials, installation, labor, and maintenance) of a proximity card system.

• Smart cards can be custom tailored to meet an organization's specific needs, or accommodate previously installed systems. For example, you can add other media such as magnetic stripes, bar codes, and laser-readable stripes to smart cards to support interactions with existing systems and services, or to increase the capacity for storage.

• Compared to traditional card technology, such as a magnetic stripe, the smart card offers more storage space, security, and confidentiality. In fact, the template can be stored on the smart card (no centralized storage), so the user owns the information and carries it with him or her.

• In comparison to cards with simpler technology (mag stripes or bar codes), smart cards can exchange data with other systems and process information.

• Smart cards can provide rigorous "three-factor" authentication: the card you possess, the password you know, and the biometric (physical trait) you are.

• Organizations of all sizes are anxious to improve the process used to identify users of their networked systems. Smart card technology significantly strengthens security because it protects both the electronic credential that authenticates an individual for access, as well as the physical device.

• Smart cards allow organizations to issue a single ID card that supports logical access, physical access, and secure data storage, along with other applications. Combining multiple applications on a single card is less costly, more convenient and provides enhanced security for different applications. For example, smart card technology is hot on college and university campuses across the nation. One card for everything from ID to access control to phone calls, vending machines, library cards, book store purchases, food service, laundry and more -- virtually eliminates the need to carry cash.
